Bay Logistics, in partnership with affiliated firm Martin Transportation Systems (MTS), has expanded operations with the acquisition of a 190,000 square-foot facility on 15 paved acres at 923 West US 20. The third-generation family-owned transportation, logistics and warehousing provider recently purchased the land and building to provide a central location for both the trucking and warehousing sides of its businesses. “We are based in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Bay Logistics owns and operates over 3 million square feet of warehouse space. Our sister company MTS runs a fleet of 1200-plus tractors and more than 3000 trailers, and recently earned another Supplier of the Year designation by General Motors,” said Kurt Cuncannan, Chief Operating Officer of Bay Logistics. “Our new Michigan City operations will serve as a trucking terminal, truck/trailer maintenance shop, and a 180,000 square foot public distribution center.” The building has undergone an extensive “make-over,” including a new roof, interior and exterior painting, new HAVC equipment, enhanced fire suppression system, new LED lighting, fence repairs/replacement, truck dock installations and parking lot upgrades. “We have invested heavily in IT systems, added some docks, upgraded the fire suppression system, renovated some of the office space and restrooms and put in new flooring where needed,” Cuncannan said. Bay Logistics currently operates from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with a team of 10 employees. “Longer hours of operation and more associates will be required as we continue to ramp up our client base,” he said. Due to this, Cuncannan said that MTS is currently in the market for truck drivers and mechanics. He added that Michigan City’s location along the I 94 Corridor is a perfect and natural point of expansion for both MTS and Bay Logistics. Having an established, family-owned business land in Michigan City highlights how the city continues to attract quality companies, added Michigan City Mayor Duane Parry. “Bay Logistics has a long history of serving the transportation and warehousing industries with its offerings. We are honored that the team has added another spot here in Michigan City as part of the company’s extensive portfolio,” Parry said. “Our business landscape and connectivity to Michigan and Chicago continue to pave our way toward more momentum and additional growth.” Cressy Commercial Real Estate from Mishawaka, IN was the broker of record for this transaction. Logistics Company Enhances Operations with New Transportation and Warehouse Facility
Michigan City, IN – Bay Logistics, in collaboration with its affiliated partner, Martin Transportation Systems (MTS), has recently expanded its operations by acquiring a 190,000 square-foot facility situated on 15 acres at 923 West US 20.
Bay Logistics, a third-generation, family-owned company specializing in transportation, logistics, and warehousing, has made this strategic move to consolidate its trucking and warehousing operations into a central location.
Kurt Cuncannan, Chief Operating Officer of Bay Logistics, commented, “We are headquartered in Grand Rapids, Mich., and currently oversee operations encompassing more than 3 million square feet of warehouse space. Our sister company, MTS, boasts a fleet of over 1,200 tractors and 3,000 trailers, and has recently been recognized as a Supplier of the Year by General Motors. Our newly established Michigan City facility will function as a multifaceted operation, serving as a trucking terminal, a truck and trailer maintenance shop, and a 180,000 square-foot public distribution center.”
The newly acquired building has undergone extensive renovations, including a new roof, interior and exterior refurbishments, updated HVAC systems, an improved fire suppression system, energy-efficient LED lighting, fence repairs and enhancements, as well as dock installations and parking lot upgrades.
Cuncannan explained, “We have also made substantial investments in IT systems, expanded our dock facilities, upgraded the fire suppression system, renovated office spaces and restrooms, and replaced flooring where necessary.”
Currently, Bay Logistics operates from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays with a team of 10 employees. As the company continues to expand its client base, Cuncannan anticipates the need for longer operational hours and the hiring of additional associates.
In response to the expansion, MTS is actively seeking truck drivers and mechanics to support their operations.
The selection of Michigan City as a location for this expansion aligns with the strategic goals of both MTS and Bay Logistics, as it positions them along the I-94 Corridor, facilitating logistics and transportation operations.
The expansion of a well-established, family-owned business in Michigan City reflects the city’s ongoing success in attracting high-quality companies, according to Michigan City Mayor Duane Parry. He stated, “Bay Logistics has a long history of serving the transportation and warehousing industries. We are delighted to have them establish a presence in Michigan City, further enriching the company’s extensive portfolio. The business-friendly environment and our connectivity to Michigan and Chicago continue to drive our city towards growth and success.
