The logistics industry has faced its share of challenges in recent times, including the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions, which have disrupted supply chains worldwide. Nevertheless, sustainability efforts within the industry have not only persisted but also intensified. Major corporations are increasingly collaborating with logistics companies to achieve more eco-friendly supply chains, with A.P. Moller-Maersk being a notable partner in these endeavors.
A significant majority of top-tier companies, approximately two-thirds of the top 200 customers, have now set Science-Based or Net-Zero targets, a notable increase from the previous year. These targets have been integrated into their business strategies, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship that resonates with their corporate ethos and is often viewed as a personal responsibility.
These partnerships have facilitated the introduction of sustainable solutions across logistics operations. In 2021 and the first half of 2022, companies have been provided with tools such as emissions dashboards and have been given opportunities to invest in green fuels and low-carbon shipping options.
A prime example of this collaborative effort is Maersk’s planned launch of the first carbon-neutral methanol-operated container vessels by early 2024. With an initial fleet of eight new vessels, the initiative is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1 million tonnes, aiding companies like HP in achieving their environmental targets.
Furthermore, companies such as VF Corporation have invested in Maersk’s ECO Delivery program to lower emissions related to shipping, while Electrolux has highlighted its commitment to decarbonizing its supply chain by 2050 through similar partnerships.
The enthusiasm for sustainable logistics solutions has led to a marked increase in the transport of cargo using green fuels, with an expansion of interest across various industries such as Chemicals, Retail, Fast-Moving Consumer Goods, and Pharmaceuticals. Additionally, several companies have backed the order of twelve new ocean-going vessels powered by green methanol, underscoring a collective commitment to low-emission solutions.
Maersk’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated by its joining of The Climate Pledge, aiming for net-zero carbon by 2040. Moreover, collaborative initiatives like coZEV seek to unify companies across sectors to advocate for decarbonized ocean shipping by the same year.
In the realm of emissions tracking, Maersk’s Emissions Dashboard was introduced to provide customers with a comprehensive view of their greenhouse gas emissions across multiple modes of transport, aiding in the identification and improvement of emissions hotspots.
Looking to the future, Maersk’s sustainable logistics solutions include the development of green options for airfreight and inland transport. Partnerships with United’s Eco-Skies Alliance and Volvo for electric trucks in North America are indicative of a broader strategy to encompass all aspects of the supply chain.
Maersk is not only focusing on biodiesel but is also exploring other green fuels like methanol and ammonia as part of its long-term strategy for a more sustainable logistics industry. Through partnerships with innovative technology companies and fuel producers, Maersk is working towards significantly increasing the production capacity of green methanol.
As the second half of 2022 unfolds, the industry can expect the introduction of more sustainable logistics initiatives. Customer feedback will continue to shape the development of these initiatives, ensuring they align with the evolving needs of the market.
