The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) is cautioning the public to remain alert to common scams that typically increase during the summer months. With the season bringing more travel, outdoor activities, and opportunities for fraudsters, the PSP emphasizes the importance of awareness and vigilance.

One of the prevalent scams during this period is the vacation rental scam. Fraudsters often post fake listings for vacation rentals on popular websites. These listings can look highly convincing, complete with attractive photos and descriptions. However, once the victim makes a payment, often via wire transfer or prepaid card, they find out that the rental property does not exist, or the actual owner has no knowledge of the listing.

Another common scheme involves unsolicited home improvement offers. Scammers may show up at a person’s door, offering services such as driveway paving, roofing, or other maintenance work. They may request a large upfront payment and either perform substandard work or disappear without completing the job.

The PSP also highlights online shopping scams as a significant concern. During the summer, consumers may seek deals on outdoor equipment, sports gear, or event tickets. Scammers create fake websites or advertisements offering popular items at low prices. Once payment is made, the items are never delivered, and the scammer is unreachable.

Additionally, concert and event ticket scams are on the rise. Fraudsters may sell counterfeit tickets or non-existent passes for popular summer events. Victims often realize they have been duped only when they attempt to enter the event and are denied access.

The PSP urges individuals to take several precautions to protect themselves from these scams. They advise verifying the legitimacy of rental properties by researching and contacting the listed property owner directly through reliable sources. For home improvement services, the PSP recommends seeking references, checking with the Better Business Bureau, and not paying large sums upfront. When shopping online, consumers should buy from reputable websites and be wary of deals that seem too good to be true. For event tickets, purchasing from official vendors and avoiding third-party sellers can help prevent fraud.

By staying informed and cautious, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to these and other scams. The PSP remains committed to educating the public and ensuring a safe and enjoyable summer for all.
