Authorities are investigating a significant theft at a high-end fashion store in Manhattan, where two individuals reportedly made off with approximately $225,000 worth of luxury items in a matter of minutes.
The incident occurred on February 12th at a Rebag store located on West Broadway in SoHo. According to investigators, the suspects forcibly entered the store through a basement entrance before breaking multiple display cases and stealing expensive handbags and watches.
Surveillance footage captured the suspects, who were not wearing masks, as one of them was seen pushing a cart believed to be filled with the stolen merchandise. Subsequently, they were spotted in the vicinity of Fresh Pond Road and 60th Road in Queens.
Management of the store declined to provide a comment regarding the theft when contacted by NBC New York.
This theft follows another daring robbery that took place just a week prior at a Gucci store in the Meatpacking District. During that incident, which occurred in broad daylight, store employees and customers were reportedly held at gunpoint as the perpetrators made off with $50,000 worth of merchandise. No arrests have been made in connection with either case.
According to the NYPD, there has been an increase in burglaries in the area in 2024, with 30 reported cases compared to 25 during the same period in 2023.
Authorities are actively investigating these incidents and working to apprehend those responsible. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with either case.
The rise in burglaries in the area has prompted heightened vigilance among law enforcement agencies, who are urging residents and businesses to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
The thefts highlight the ongoing challenge of preventing crime in bustling urban areas like SoHo, where high-end stores are often targeted by criminals seeking valuable merchandise.
Efforts to combat such criminal activity include increased patrols, enhanced security measures, and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and local businesses to ensure the safety and security of the community.
As investigations into these thefts continue, authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.
