Orbital Marine Power, a developer of floating tidal turbine technology, has chosen Global Energy Group (GEG) as the preferred supplier to lead the manufacture and assembly of tidal turbines for projects in Orkney, Scotland. The manufacturing of turbines is expected to begin at GEG’s Port of Nigg facility on the Cromarty Firth later this year, with the first power anticipated from the Orkney-connected projects in 2026. These projects have secured contracts through the UK Government’s Contract for Difference (CfD) auction rounds 4 and 5.
They will build on the success of Orbital’s O2, the world’s most powerful tidal turbine. Launched and operational since 2021 off the Orkney coast, the O2 turbine offsets around 2,000 tonnes of CO2 annually and powers 1,700 UK homes, while also creating high-value jobs in the local economy. Orbital Marine Power aims to use a predominantly UK-based supply chain for the manufacture and installation of its tidal projects, anticipating a boost in UK job creation with the delivery of its CfD projects.
