The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has identified nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benue State that are at significant risk of flooding. This warning comes as the rainy season intensifies, with potential impacts on communities and infrastructure within the state.

NEMA’s assessment, based on weather forecasts and hydrological data, indicates that the LGAs of Makurdi, Guma, Agatu, Logo, Buruku, Katsina-Ala, Otukpo, Tarka, and Gboko could experience severe flooding. These areas are particularly vulnerable due to their geographical location and historical flood patterns.

The agency has urged residents of these LGAs to take precautionary measures to safeguard lives and properties. NEMA’s Director-General emphasized the importance of early preparation, including the relocation of residents in flood-prone areas to higher grounds. He also highlighted the need for community awareness and education on flood risks and safety measures.

In response to the forecast, NEMA has collaborated with state and local authorities to develop and implement flood mitigation strategies. These efforts include the clearing of drainage systems, construction of embankments, and establishment of emergency response teams. The agency has also prepositioned relief materials to provide immediate assistance to affected communities.

The Benue State government has been advised to enhance its disaster preparedness and response capabilities. This includes strengthening infrastructure, improving early warning systems, and conducting regular training for emergency personnel.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and heed the advice of authorities. The cooperation of the public is crucial in minimizing the impact of potential flooding. NEMA continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.

The identification of these flood-prone areas underscores the need for ongoing vigilance and proactive measures to protect lives and property in Benue State. As the rainy season progresses, the combined efforts of NEMA, state authorities, and the public are essential in mitigating the risks associated with flooding.
