Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the White House this week for meetings with President Donald Trump, as the administration signaled it may introduce additional tariffs on several U.S. trading partners.
During the visit, Trump confirmed that the United States will provide additional weapons to Ukraine following a recent pause in shipments. He also expressed his dissatisfaction with recent developments but did not provide further details.
Separately, Trump’s nominee for U.N. ambassador, former national security adviser Mike Waltz, is expected to appear before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for a confirmation hearing next week, according to a source familiar with the plans. Axios was the first to report the expected hearing, though the exact date has not yet been confirmed.
Trump announced Waltz as his choice for the diplomatic post on May 1. Since then, the process has faced delays due to the extensive documentation required for the nomination. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch said last month that Waltz did not need to submit this level of paperwork for his previous role as national security adviser, which does not require Senate confirmation.
Waltz is expected to address questions from senators regarding his involvement in a private messaging group that reportedly discussed U.S. military actions abroad and accidentally included a journalist.
The ambassador role was initially offered to Representative Elise Stefanik of New York. Her nomination was withdrawn on March 27 after it remained stalled for several months. Trump noted at the time that Stefanik was needed in the House of Representatives to help maintain the slim Republican majority and to advance his legislative agenda. Last week, the House approved the president’s priority bill with Stefanik voting in favor.
The White House has not yet provided additional details on the potential scope or timing of any new tariffs, though Trump indicated that trade measures could be adjusted based on ongoing negotiations.
