Shou Chew, the CEO of video-hosting platform TikTok, declared that the app is “here to stay” while addressing Montana’s decision to ban it, labeling the move as “unconstitutional.” The Chinese-owned app has faced bans by various governments and organizations, citing concerns that user data could be accessed by the Chinese government. Chew expressed confidence in winning the lawsuit filed against the ban in Montana, emphasizing its alleged unconstitutionality. Additionally, TikTok users in the United States have initiated a separate lawsuit against the impending ban, scheduled for January 1 next year.

Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha, Chew dismissed the Montana ban as unconstitutional and highlighted TikTok’s significance with over 150 million users in the US and more than a billion worldwide. He emphasized the app’s unique user experience, providing a platform for discovery and free expression. Chew addressed concerns about a potential global ban, asserting TikTok’s positive impact, serving millions globally, and expressing confidence in engaging with regulators worldwide.

When questioned about a contingency plan (“plan B”) in the event of a global ban, Chew stressed TikTok’s widespread influence and positive impact, fostering thoughtful conversations with regulators globally. He affirmed TikTok’s commitment to remain a significant player in the digital landscape.

Chew also discussed data protection initiatives, unveiling “Project Texas,” a $1.5 billion project aimed at safeguarding US user data. The project involves partnerships with Texas-based tech company Oracle and incorporates a firewall to prevent unauthorized foreign access to protected user data. Chew underscored the company’s efforts to go above and beyond industry standards in protecting the safety of US user data. He revealed a similar project in Europe, called “Project Clover,” indicating ongoing commitment to data security.

While acknowledging the impossibility of guaranteeing 100 percent data safety, Chew provided reassurance about TikTok’s proactive measures and commitment to addressing concerns raised by regulators globally.
