Dell Technologies has released its latest Global Data Protection Index (GDPI), Cyber Resiliency Multicloud Edition, which highlights significant concerns about escalating cyber threats impacting organizations. The report focuses on the challenges of data protection, the rise of generative AI, and the expansion into multicloud environments. According to the GDPI, 57% of respondents from Australia, India, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore experienced a cyberattack in the past 12 months that disrupted data access. This figure represents the highest in over five years.

Lucas Salter, General Manager of Data Protection Solutions at Dell Technologies for Asia Pacific, Japan, and Greater China, stated, “Organizations in the Asia Pacific and Japan are facing challenges due to massive data growth, unique data mobility needs, and increased experimentation with generative AI.” He highlighted the need for comprehensive data protection strategies to enhance cyber resilience in light of the increasing frequency and complexity of cyberattacks.

The survey indicates widespread concern among organizations, with 76% expressing doubts about their current data protection methods’ ability to handle ransomware threats. Moreover, 66% lack confidence in their ability to reliably recover after a major cyberattack. Despite these concerns, more than half of the companies (54%) prioritize investing in cyberattack prevention over recovery. The rise in remote working during the pandemic has increased the risk of data loss from cyberattacks for 83% of organizations, up from 76%. The report also examines the effectiveness and limitations of insurance policies as a financial safeguard, noting that 95% of organizations have such policies but face several coverage limitations. It reveals that 88% of organizations had to pay to access their blocked data.

Many companies are taking proactive steps to enhance their cyber resilience. Approximately half are employing professional services for additional resources, 52% conduct regular cyber recovery testing, and 42% use a cyber vault for data protection. The GDPI also considers the implications of generative AI on cyber threats and future data protection needs. About 46% believe generative AI will improve their cybersecurity stance, while 89% recognize that it is likely to generate vast amounts of new data and increase the value of certain data types.

As more companies shift to public cloud solutions, hybrid working models, and generative AI, the importance of data protection becomes increasingly evident. The report underscores the complexity of safeguarding digital assets amid a constantly evolving cyber threat landscape. The GDPI survey, conducted in September and October 2023, involved 1,500 IT and IT security decision-makers across various industries globally.
