RobCo GmbH has recently concluded a Series B funding round, securing $42.5 million to support its ongoing development and expansion endeavors. The company, known for its efforts in democratizing industrial automation, aims to make advanced robotic systems accessible to small and midsize manufacturers.

Founded in 2020 by a team of three researchers, including Roman Hölzl, Chair of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Munich, RobCo has swiftly grown to employ over 50 professionals. The company specializes in creating adaptable robotic hardware kits tailored for applications within small and midsize enterprises (SMEs), ranging from machine loading and unloading to dispensing, palletizing, and welding.

One of RobCo’s distinguishing features is its patented modular hardware, complemented by a user-friendly, low-code deployment approach. This approach aims to simplify the implementation of automation systems, allowing manufacturers to address various challenges such as labor shortages, scalability, and the transition to Industry 4.0.

Roman Hölzl, expressing optimism about the company’s future, stated, “We are at the outset of an extensive automation journey and aspire to lead in modular robot automation for SMEs in Europe. RobCo’s easy-to-implement robots offer a positive ROI from Day 1.”

RobCo’s robotic arms are designed with flexibility and adaptability in mind, featuring modular components that can be quickly reconfigured to accommodate different tasks and usage scenarios. The company’s robotic kits consist of seven or eight modular pieces, each with varying payload capacities and ranges tailored to specific applications.

For instance, RobCo’s machine-tending laser system, comprising eight modules, boasts a 4 kg (8.8 lb.) payload and an 800 mm (31.5 in.) range. Similarly, its palletizing solution, also utilizing eight modules, offers an 8.5 kg (18.7 lb.) payload and a 1,300 mm (51 in.) range.

To streamline the assembly and management of robotic systems, RobCo offers the RobCo Studio platform, an integrated hardware and software solution. RobCo Studio allows users to configure, implement, and monitor deployed robots remotely via a digital twin, minimizing the need for complex programming or specialized personnel onsite.

The recent Series B funding round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Sequoia Capital, Kindred Capital, and Promus Ventures. RobCo plans to allocate the capital towards expanding its distribution channels and advancing product development efforts.

Martin Matern, plant manager at DE-VAU-GE Gesundkostwerk Deutschland GmbH, praised RobCo’s automation solutions, stating, “Through a comprehensive RobCo automation solution in the palletizing area, we can actively address the ongoing shortage of skilled workers with technology and at the same time save costs.”

Alex Schmitt, a partner at Lightspeed, emphasized the significance of RobCo’s contributions, noting, “RobCo has already made a significant breakthrough in this field with its developments. We recognize both technological and commercial potential for the German and international markets.”
