Maersk and IBM Launch GlobalTradeOS as Blockchain-Agnostic Successor to TradeLens, Onboarding 15 Carriers and 200 Freight Forwarders

Summary

  • GlobalTradeOS launches as blockchain-agnostic platform interoperating with CargoX, GSBN, edoxOnline
  • 15 carriers and 200 freight forwarders already onboarded to new joint venture
  • Zero-knowledge proofs verify electronic bills of lading without exposing commercial data
  • First live shipment: refrigerated pharmaceuticals from Rotterdam to Singapore on October 8

Following the 2023 shutdown of TradeLens, Maersk and IBM have quietly launched a new joint venture called GlobalTradeOS, a blockchain-agnostic trade documentation platform designed to interoperate with multiple distributed ledgers including CargoX, GSBN, and edoxOnline. According to Lloyd’s List, the platform has already onboarded 15 carriers and 200 freight forwarders. IBM’s Blockchain Lead, Marie Wieck, said: ‘We learned from TradeLens that neutrality and interoperability are non-negotiable. GlobalTradeOS does not own the ledger; it connects them.’ The system uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify electronic bills of lading without exposing commercial data—a critical feature for competitors who were reluctant to share sensitive information on a platform owned by Maersk, the world’s largest container shipping line.

Maersk’s Head of Trade Digitization, Rotem Hershko, confirmed the venture is independent of Maersk’s own shipping operations to avoid antitrust concerns. The first live shipment tracked via GlobalTradeOS was a refrigerated container of pharmaceuticals from Rotterdam to Singapore on October 8, 2026. The launch represents a significant strategic pivot from the TradeLens model, which attempted to create a single proprietary ledger controlled by Maersk and IBM. That approach faced resistance from competitors and ultimately failed to achieve critical mass. GlobalTradeOS instead positions itself as a neutral interoperability layer, connecting existing blockchain networks rather than replacing them.

The development comes amid broader momentum in blockchain-based trade documentation. According to The Straits Times, Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and the UAE’s Ministry of Economy signed a memorandum of understanding to create a blockchain-based trade corridor for halal food exports using Singapore’s TradeTrust framework. The corridor will digitize halal certificates, phytosanitary certificates, and bills of lading on a shared ledger to reduce border delays. UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Thani Al Zeyoudi, said: ‘This corridor cuts clearance times from 5 days to 8 hours for participating exporters.’ The first shipment under the corridor—a consignment of frozen chicken from Brazil to Singapore via Dubai—was completed on October 9, 2026. IMDA’s Assistant Chief Executive, Daniel Lim, noted that 30 companies have already joined, with plans to expand to Indonesia and Malaysia by 2027.

These initiatives reflect a maturing approach to blockchain in trade: rather than seeking to monopolize infrastructure, new platforms emphasize interoperability and neutrality. For freight forwarders and carriers, this means reduced risk of platform lock-in and the ability to connect to multiple digital trade ecosystems simultaneously.
