South Korea reinforced its position as a key global supply chain hub after exports surged across 14 of its 20 major industries during the first seven months of 2026, driven by robust demand for semiconductors, AI-related technologies, and other high-value manufactured goods.
The country recorded US$595.2 billion in exports from January to July, a 50.5% increase from the same period last year and the highest level on record. Semiconductor shipments led the expansion, while exports of computers, wireless communication devices, biohealth products, cosmetics, ships, and petroleum products also posted solid gains, reflecting broad-based strength across advanced manufacturing.
The strong performance elevated South Korea to sixth place among the world’s leading exporters, overtaking Japan, while also strengthening its market share in major destinations including China and the United States. Rising exports of AI infrastructure products, including memory chips, servers, and power equipment, highlight the country’s growing role in supporting global digital transformation and technology supply chains.
Regional demand remained resilient across key markets such as ASEAN, the European Union, the United States, and China, reinforcing South Korea’s role in connecting manufacturing networks with global consumer and industrial demand. Expanding exports to Southeast Asia further strengthened regional supply chain integration across electronics, semiconductors, and industrial products.
Looking ahead, continued investment in AI infrastructure, advanced semiconductors, electric vehicles, biohealth, and high-value manufacturing is expected to support export momentum through the second half of the year. While some traditional industries continue to adjust to evolving global trade conditions, South Korea’s diversified export base and leadership in advanced technologies position it to remain a critical driver of resilient global supply chains.
