A direct farm-to-consumer model in New Zealand is demonstrating how shorter distribution routes can support fresh-produce quality, efficient handling, and post-harvest management.
The model centers on harvesting avocados according to customer orders and sending the fruit directly to consumers without an extended cool-storage stage. Because avocados begin ripening after harvest, the approach allows fruit to remain on the trees until it is ready for distribution while limiting handling throughout the supply chain.
By reducing the number of handling points between orchards and consumers, the model creates a more streamlined route from production to delivery. Unripe fruit can also be transported before becoming more sensitive to pressure and handling as it approaches its eating stage.
The operation has supplied around 15 million avocados to more than 13,000 subscribers over 10 years, with deliveries reaching customers across New Zealand within days of harvest. Each shipment provides harvest information and an estimated ready-to-eat period, helping consumers manage the fruit after delivery.
Supply is maintained through several avocado varieties across different production periods. Hass avocados can remain on trees for much of the year, while GEM and Reed varieties provide additional seasonal availability. This combination supports a more continuous supply of fresh produce throughout the year.
The direct model also incorporates packaging considerations. Recyclable boxes, paper tape, and untreated New Zealand pine wood wool are used for deliveries, supporting packaging efficiency alongside the shorter distribution pathway.
Working directly with growers in the Bay of Plenty further connects production and distribution within the same supply network. The approach highlights how farm-to-consumer logistics can combine seasonal sourcing, simplified handling, packaging choices, and delivery scheduling to create an efficient fresh-produce supply chain.
