India has signed its first-ever agreement for the export of Green Ammonia to Japan, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push to become a global leader in green hydrogen and ammonia production. The agreement was formalized at a ceremony chaired by the Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, and attended by key representatives from India, Japan, and Singapore. The Heads of Terms (HoT) agreement for the cross-border green ammonia supply was signed between Sembcorp Industries, Sojitz Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power Co., and NYK Line. This collaboration highlights India’s growing importance in the global green energy sector.
Sembcorp Industries, headquartered in Singapore, will lead the production of green ammonia in India using renewable energy sources. Kyushu Electric Power Co. plans to integrate this green ammonia into their energy mix in Japan, reducing coal consumption at their thermal power plants. Sojitz Corporation will serve as the business intermediary, while NYK Line will manage the maritime transportation of green ammonia from India to Japan.
During the event, Shri Pralhad Joshi emphasized the significance of this partnership in establishing a robust supply chain from production in India to consumption in Japan. He also highlighted India’s rapid advancements in green hydrogen and renewable energy under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Shri Joshi announced that a tender for 7.5 lakh TPA of Green Ammonia is currently live, with additional tenders for 4.5 lakh TPA capacity also underway. These efforts are part of India’s broader strategy to boost green energy production and solidify its position as a key player in the global green energy market.
The agreement between India and Japan not only strengthens bilateral ties but also showcases India’s commitment to sustainable development and energy independence.
