For years, the concept of the “perfect order” has been widely discussed in the retail industry without a clear definition. This new article series seeks to fill that gap by offering a comprehensive framework to help vendors enhance their supply chain efficiency and ensure compliance.

Defining and Achieving the Perfect Order

The series is inspired by the Customer Bill of Rights, developed by former University of Wisconsin (Madison) Professor Dr. Edward Marien. Katz first encountered Dr. Marien’s “8Rs,” which outline fundamental customer rights, in a 2005 article. Recognizing their relevance to supply chain execution, Katz expands upon these principles, applying them to retail and grocery vendor operations.

Each installment of The Perfect Order explores a different aspect of vendor compliance, from data accuracy to operational execution. Additionally, each main article is paired with a supplementary “Explainer” piece that offers further insights, drawing from Katz’s 30 years of experience in supply chain technology and business operations.

Call for Improved Vendor Compliance Programs

The series also highlights the financial risks of non-compliance, including costly penalties known as “chargebacks” that retailers impose on vendors who fail to meet required standards. Katz advocates for a more collaborative approach between vendors and retailers, emphasizing that compliance programs should be designed to facilitate vendor success rather than serve as punitive measures.

“In today’s competitive retail landscape, execution is a critical differentiator,” said Katz. “Vendor compliance should be about enabling success, ensuring goods are available both in-store and online when consumers need them.”

Availability and Industry Impact

The Perfect Order article series is published by Supply Chain Management Review and is accessible at: SCMR Article Series.

Norman Katz is recognized as an expert in supply chain technologies, including Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), and barcode labeling systems. His book, Successful Supply Chain Vendor Compliance (Gower/Routledge, 2016), was the first to address the intricacies of vendor compliance in the supply chain sector.
