UK, US, and Australia Sanction Russian Cybercriminal Linked to LockBit Ransomware Group

in Compliance, Sanctions

UK, US, and Australia jointly announced sanctions against a Russian individual allegedly linked to cybercriminal activities. The sanctioned individual, Dmitry Khoroshev, is purportedly associated with the cybercrime group LockBit, known for its ransomware attacks on businesses worldwide.

According to authorities, LockBit has been responsible for extorting over $1 billion from numerous victims globally, including more than 200 businesses in the UK. Earlier this year, the National Crime Agency (NCA) claimed to have disrupted LockBit’s operations, significantly reducing its capabilities. Despite attempts by the group to rebuild, authorities assess that LockBit is currently operating at a limited capacity.

The sanctions imposed on Khoroshev include asset freezes and travel bans. Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the Sanctions Minister, emphasized the collaborative effort with allies to combat hostile cyber activities. Graeme Biggar, Director General of the National Crime Agency, highlighted the significant damage caused by LockBit’s attacks and reaffirmed ongoing efforts to dismantle the group.

Eleanor Fairford, Deputy Director for Incident Management at the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), underscored the importance of strong cybersecurity measures to mitigate the threat of ransomware attacks. The UK’s decision to sanction Khoroshev aligns with its broader strategy to counter malicious cyber activities and promote international security in cyberspace, in coordination with allies like Australia and the US.
