Vietnam’s Prime Minister Calls for Enhanced Logistics to Support Agricultural Sector

HANOI — In a recent move to bolster the nation’s agricultural sector, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has issued a directive emphasizing the need for improved logistics connectivity. This initiative aims to boost the consumption and export of Vietnam’s agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products, marking it as a crucial endeavor within the scope of agricultural and rural development.

The directive assigns the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) the leading role in this ambitious project. MARD is to work in concert with various ministries, agencies, and local governments to develop and present a comprehensive logistics service development plan. This strategic plan, targeting enhancements up to 2030 and envisioning progress till 2050, is expected to significantly raise the quality and competitiveness of Vietnamese farm produce on the global stage.

Key responsibilities under this directive include MARD’s collaboration with local governments to update and expand the planning of dedicated logistics centers for agricultural goods. Additionally, the ministry is to partner with the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) to organize educational programs focused on logistics, supply chains, and specifically, the logistics chains of farm produce. These programs are designed for a broad audience, including state and local management officials, as well as entrepreneurs and cooperatives involved in the agricultural sector.

A crucial aspect of MARD’s mandate involves enhancing international cooperation, particularly with China, as outlined in the Vietnam-China Joint Statement. MARD, alongside the MoIT and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is tasked with executing the statement’s agricultural cooperation agreements, aiming to open markets for Vietnamese farm products, diversify distribution channels, improve logistics services at border gates, and streamline farm produce trade through e-commerce platforms.

The MoIT is entrusted with a significant responsibility to draft a national strategy for logistics service development covering the period from 2025 to 2035, with a long-term vision extending to 2045. This strategy is expected to include robust trade promotion efforts and assist Vietnamese firms in establishing effective agricultural supply chains linked with logistic services, thereby securing their place in global markets.

The Prime Minister’s directive also outlines specific tasks for the ministries of Planning and Investment, Finance, and Transport. It calls upon centrally governed cities and provinces, the Vietnam Logistics Business Association, and various agricultural associations to play supportive roles in this national logistics enhancement strategy.

This comprehensive approach aims not only to address the immediate logistical challenges facing Vietnam’s agricultural exporters but also to lay the groundwork for sustainable growth and increased global market penetration for Vietnamese farm produce. By streamlining logistics and supply chain processes, the directive seeks to unlock new opportunities for Vietnam’s agricultural sector, ensuring its products can compete more effectively on the international stage.
