Natasha Shek, a single mom from Lingfield, Surrey, shared her story about being scammed while trying to book a holiday. She thought she found a great place to stay in Cornwall after seeing a property listing on social media. She paid a £280 deposit, but the person she was in touch with stopped replying, and she found out that he didn’t actually own the property. Luckily, she managed to get her money back and found another place to stay.
As online scams become more common, especially around the holidays, Action Fraud warns that scammers are taking advantage of those searching for budget-friendly trips. In 2022-2023, there were 6,457 reported holiday scams, resulting in losses of over £15.3 million, a big jump from the year before. Experts suggest doing thorough research before making any online bookings, being cautious of deals that sound too good to be true, and sticking to trusted travel websites.
