Liquefied Natural Gas Expansion Boosts Energy Exports

by Jessica Jumaway

in Energy

A major liquefied natural gas expansion in Louisiana is moving forward through a streamlined federal permitting process, supporting the growth of United States energy export infrastructure and international supply networks.

The proposed $18 billion expansion would more than double the terminal’s footprint and increase its annual natural gas capacity from approximately 1.4 trillion cubic feet to 2.3 trillion cubic feet. Once completed, the facility is expected to become one of the largest liquefied natural gas export terminals in North America.

The project is part of broader growth in the United States energy export sector, with more than 30 liquefied natural gas export terminals under construction or proposed nationwide. Additional capacity can strengthen international energy supply networks as countries continue diversifying their sources of natural gas.

Located along the Mississippi River, the terminal connects natural gas production and processing with maritime transportation routes. Its existing infrastructure includes three ship berths, gas-fired power facilities and nearly 30 miles of natural gas pipelines.

International markets remain an important destination for United States liquefied natural gas. Most of the facility’s exports in 2025 were delivered overseas, with European markets among the leading destinations.

The expansion is also expected to support activity throughout the wider energy supply chain, including natural gas production, pipeline transportation, engineering, construction, shipping and energy infrastructure services.

The project also plans to incorporate carbon capture and underground storage technology as part of its expanded operations, highlighting the growing role of technology in large-scale energy infrastructure development.

The expansion underscores the continued growth of the United States energy export sector and its role in connecting domestic energy production with global markets.
