Hollywood is set to experience a significant standstill as the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA announces a joint strike with screenwriters. This decision, spearheaded by the union’s lead negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, follows failed negotiations with major entertainment studios like Disney, Netflix, and Amazon. The strike, commencing at midnight, marks the first collaborative action between Hollywood actors and screenwriters in 60 years.

SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher criticized the studios for prioritizing profit over the people who drive the industry, stating, “Shame on them. They are on the wrong side of history.” The strike aims to address demands for improved base pay, residuals from streaming services, and job protections against the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the industry.

The strike’s impact is anticipated to be profound, halting current and future productions. Al Jazeera’s Rob Reynolds, reporting from Los Angeles, emphasized the significant disruption this action would cause. Productions worldwide will cease operations, leading to an immediate halt in the entertainment industry’s workflow.

Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed concerns over the workers’ demands, labeling them “very disturbing” and emphasizing the strike’s disruptive nature. However, his remarks faced criticism on social media, highlighting the contrast between his annual earnings and the financial struggles of many entertainment workers.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers highlighted their offer, which includes pay increases, higher pension and health contribution caps, audition protections, shortened series option periods, and a proposal addressing AI’s role in the industry. Yet, actors have pointed out the discrepancies in earnings within the industry. Matt Damon, speaking at a film event, noted the need for equitable distribution of income, especially for those barely meeting the threshold for health insurance through residual payments.

The strike reflects a broader trend of increased labor activism and unionization, as workers across various sectors push for better compensation, benefits, and working conditions amid rising inequality.
