Industrial Polymers & Chemicals Inc. (IPAC), a pioneering manufacturing company based in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, has developed a groundbreaking bioactive filtration technology. This innovative approach, leveraging biocidal polymer systems, is set to transform the effectiveness of residential and commercial HVAC filters in combating airborne viral and bacterial pathogens. Amidst growing international consensus on the need for improved indoor air quality and effective filtration of airborne viruses, IPAC’s technology arrives at a crucial time. The impending implementation of new engineering standards for ventilation and air filtration, ASHRAE 241, underscores the demand for advanced HVAC system designs and operations. IPAC’s bioactive filtration platform and ablative polymer technology, both cost-effective solutions, require no reinstallation or modification of existing HVAC systems.

The technology, believed to be a significant tool in the fight against airborne viruses and bacteria, has the potential to substantially impact the $12 billion global HVAC filter industry. An environmental analysis conducted by an independent third party with over 40 years of industry experience confirms the environmental safety of IPAC’s technology. IPAC, founded in 1959 by Ralph G. Dacey, a Harvard Business School graduate and a US Navy veteran, has long been a leader in fiberglass reinforcement technology for the abrasives industry. Under the leadership of CEO and Chairman Susan Dacey since 1996, the company has maintained its dominance in traditional business lines while expanding into new areas. IPAC boasts nearly seven decades of expertise in coating woven fabrics with polymer systems and has diversified into various fabric applications, including personal protective equipment for healthcare workers.

In 2021, Thomas Kennedy, IPAC’s Chief Technical Officer, invented a novel ablative polymer system to enhance HVAC filters’ performance against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This development was spurred by an award from the Innovation Institute at the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative in October 2020, aimed at encouraging new technology to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. IPAC’s patented technology is poised to revolutionize air filtration in the HVAC industry by significantly boosting filtration efficiency without compromising the mechanical properties of the filters or increasing pressure drop. The issued US patents for this technology include 11484027, 11684066, 11766040, and 11793194. The IPAC development team, led by CEO Susan Dacey, includes key figures like Ralph G. Dacey, Jr., Joan Dacey-Seib, Robert M. Roth, and Thomas J. Kennedy. Their collective expertise and dedication have been instrumental in this significant technological advancement, marking a new era in air filtration and HVAC efficiency.
