Indonesia Strengthens Commodity Export Monitoring

by Jessica Jumaway

in Supply Chain Transparency

Indonesia is strengthening oversight of strategic commodity exports as the government expands monitoring systems designed to improve supply chain visibility and ensure greater transparency across international trade flows.

President Prabowo Subianto said the country’s new state export entity has monitored more than 6,500 transactions involving palm oil, coal, and ferroalloy exports during its first two months of operation, covering approximately $14 billion in export value.

The monitoring initiative is expected to expand to 50 ports, with plans to eventually cover a wider range of strategic commodities. The approach is designed to improve oversight of export transactions, strengthen reporting accuracy, and provide greater visibility across Indonesia’s commodity supply chains.

The government has also identified opportunities to improve the capture of export proceeds, with an estimated $5 billion in potential additional revenue linked to differences between reported and actual commodity prices.

Indonesia’s strategy highlights the growing role of traceability, accurate trade data, and centralized monitoring in managing commodity supply chains. With major resources such as palm oil, coal, and metals moving through international markets, stronger visibility can support more effective trade administration and supply chain management.

The initiative also forms part of Indonesia’s broader efforts to strengthen domestic resource management and expand economic value from its natural resources. The country is simultaneously advancing self-sufficiency initiatives in several food commodities while developing investment and infrastructure to support long-term economic growth.

For exporters and supply chain stakeholders, enhanced monitoring of commodity movements can encourage more accurate documentation, stronger transaction visibility, and improved coordination between ports, exporters, government agencies, and international markets.

As Indonesia continues to develop its strategic commodity sector, digital monitoring, export traceability, and transparent supply chain data are expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting efficient and accountable global trade.
