Indonesia Expands Rice Imports from Việt Nam and Thailand

Indonesia has made the decision to import an additional 1.5 million tonnes of rice, and its primary sources for this rice procurement will be Việt Nam and Thailand. The announcement came after Indonesian President Joko Widodo declared that the country would require an extra 1.5 million tonnes of rice reserves to supplement the 2 million tonnes imported since the beginning of the year.

The necessary import licenses for the 1.5 million tonnes of rice have already been issued by Indonesian authorities, with imports scheduled to commence at the end of the current month.

Indonesia’s choice to select Việt Nam as its primary supplier for rice purchases is a testament to the high quality and reputation of Vietnamese rice. The reliable supply of Vietnamese rice has garnered the trust of the Indonesian Government and consumers. Indonesia is currently grappling with a shortage of domestically produced food output, largely due to the impact of the El Nino phenomenon.

As a measure to combat rising food prices, particularly for commodities like corn, sugar, and rice, the Indonesian Government plans to increase imports. According to President Joko Widodo, this decision was reached during a cabinet meeting, given the current global circumstances such as conflicts and El Nino events.

The Indonesian Government is set to import 250,000 tonnes of corn for the animal feed industry, while it awaits favorable prices before deciding on sugar imports. Importers of sugar have only registered to import approximately 30% of the total allocated sugar import quota.

To maximize this opportunity, the Việt Nam Trade Office in Indonesia advises Vietnamese rice exporters to follow the guidance provided by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) regarding rice exports to the Indonesian market. This includes closely monitoring market conditions, assessing opportunities and risks, and entering into suitable contracts to ensure efficient exports while benefiting local farmers.

In the first nine months of this year, Việt Nam exported 884,177 tonnes of rice to the Indonesian market, with a total value of $462 million. This represents a significant increase in both quantity and price compared to the same period last year. Overall, Việt Nam’s exports to Indonesia reached $3.79 billion during the first nine months of the year, marking an 11% year-on-year growth.
