The Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) has announced the departure of its first banana export train of the season from Tadipatri, Andhra Pradesh, to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai. The train, carrying 680 tonnes of bananas from SK Exports, left on November 22. From Mumbai, the fruit will be distributed to international markets. This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance India’s agricultural exports. Although India is the world’s largest banana producer, the country accounted for only 1% of global banana exports in 2023.
In late 2023, India set an ambitious goal to increase its banana exports to $1 billion over the next five years, following the success of a trial shipment to the Netherlands. Traditionally, India relied on airfreight for fruit exports, but with this new development, sea freight protocols have been introduced to accommodate the growing export volume.
