Ho Chi Minh City has unveiled ambitious plans to position itself as a regional logistics hub in Southeast Asia by 2030 and a global logistics service center by 2045. The city aims to leverage its growing logistics sector, currently expanding at an annual rate of 16%, to integrate more deeply into global supply chains.
During the recent Ho Chi Minh City Logistics Conference, Deputy Chairman of the People’s Committee, Vo Van Hoan, emphasized that developing logistics into a sustainable and pioneering economic sector is a top priority. Investments in infrastructure, including port capacity upgrades and expanded warehousing, will support this goal, with a focus on transparency and private sector involvement through streamlined processes and favorable tax policies.
A key objective is adopting green logistics practices to reduce emissions and enhance sustainability, which officials consider crucial for competitiveness. The city also plans to incorporate Industry 4.0 technologies and prioritize projects that emphasize digital transformation and environmental protection.
Key Statistics and Challenges
- Vietnam’s logistics industry ranks 43rd in the Logistics Performance Index as of 2023.
- The sector contributes 4%-5% to Vietnam’s GDP, employs over one million people, and is valued at approximately $40 billion.
- Infrastructure investment accounts for 5.7% of GDP, the highest in Southeast Asia.
Despite these strengths, challenges remain. Public investment in infrastructure is only at 22% of planned disbursements, leading to unresolved traffic bottlenecks that impact logistics operations. Moreover, most logistics enterprises are small to medium-sized and face difficulties in scaling operations and adopting digital technologies.
Future Prospects
Key projects, including the development of Ring Road 3, are expected to improve transport and reduce logistics costs. Experts have also highlighted the need for accelerated road and railway projects and better utilization of waterway ports to boost connectivity.
With free trade agreements and favorable investment conditions driving growth, Vietnam’s logistics market is projected to expand by 14%-15% annually, reaching new heights by 2025.
