Recent proposals from the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) and Customs outline potential job cuts, affecting various positions including dog trainers from Customs’ Detector Dog Unit, anti-money laundering regulators, and a lead investigator of digital child exploitation.
The proposed cuts, totaling over 100 roles, include disestablishing 41 jobs in anti-money laundering, countering financing of terrorism, and digital safety at DIA. Meanwhile, Customs is considering cutting 78 roles across border operations, intelligence, and enforcement.
These roles are distributed nationwide, with implications for Auckland, Whangarei, Gisborne, Timaru, Invercargill, and Christchurch. Proposed disestablishments include dog trainer roles, senior customs officers, and members of the assurance team.
In response to these proposals, various stakeholders have expressed concerns. Fleur Fitzsimons, assistant secretary of the Public Service Association, highlighted potential risks, especially considering the increasing sophistication and harm caused by related crimes.
Customs assured that the proposed cuts would not impact frontline border services and critical support. They noted that some positions were already vacant, and the recent voluntary redundancy round also contributed to the total figure.
Similarly, DIA acknowledged the proposal, mentioning plans to create 19 new roles alongside disestablishing 78 positions. They clarified that a significant portion of the proposed cuts involves vacant positions, which were held in anticipation over recent months.
Additionally, DIA confirmed changes in response to cost-saving targets, mentioning a broader organizational change affecting positions and staff.
Regarding the water services transition, DIA noted a reduction in staff due to the repeal of water reform laws. While many positions have ended, some staff will be retained to support the implementation of new initiatives.
Overall, these proposed changes reflect ongoing efforts to streamline operations and meet organizational objectives amid evolving priorities and financial constraints.
