Harrods Implements Sales Restrictions on Luxury Goods to Russia in Compliance with UK Sanctions

in Compliance, Sanctions

Harrods, a renowned British department store, has announced its decision to cease the sale of high-end luxury products valued at over $370 to customers residing in Russia. The move is in response to the UK government’s ban on the export of certain luxury goods to Russia.

Harrods has proactively reached out to customers whose information indicates that they might be affected by the export restrictions, ensuring that they are aware of the new purchasing limitations at the upscale establishment.

In an official statement provided to Insider, Harrods stated that these restrictions have been put in place to align with the sanctions imposed by the UK government against Russia. The store emphasized that the UK authorities have introduced additional regulations, specifically targeting the sale of specific categories of luxury goods. This encompasses goods exceeding a certain value, typically around £300, and applies to customers who are presently or typically residing in Russia.

The UK government’s sanctions, introduced in March, encompass a range of “high-end luxury goods” and include items like luxury automobiles, high-fashion products, and artwork.

To ensure compliance with these regulations, Harrods conducted a review of its customer database to identify individuals who may be impacted by the restrictions. Customers were also given the opportunity to update their information if necessary. Importantly, Harrods clarified that these measures are based on address and contact details, as well as previous transaction delivery data, rather than nationality.

Dan Webster, the group general counsel at Harrods, emphasized, “The recent steps taken by Harrods are to comply with the law, and this applies to all retailers of luxury goods in the UK.”

When questioned by Insider, Harrods did not specify which luxury items are subject to the export ban.

It’s worth noting that this decision comes after Harrods faced criticism in the House of Commons for selling a high-priced brand of Russian vodka, which had garnered attention for being discreetly positioned in the store.

Harrods, recognized as one of the United Kingdom’s most iconic luxury department stores, boasts an extensive collection of over 5,000 brands in its inventory, as detailed on its official website.
