Red Tractor Delays Green Farms Commitment Pending NFU Governance Review

Red Tractor, a key player in the UK’s agricultural assurance sector, has decided to delay the implementation of its Green Farms Commitment. This postponement is in response to an ongoing independent review of its governance by the National Farmers Union (NFU). The commitment, initially announced in October with support from the British Retail Consortium and major retailers, was designed as a voluntary scheme to start in April 2024. Its aim is to certify the environmental practices of farms for consumers.

However, the plan faced significant criticism from farmers. Concerns were raised about the lack of farmer consultation in the scheme’s development and uncertainty regarding the financial responsibilities associated with the new environmental commitments.

In light of these concerns, the NFU has embarked on two reviews: one focused on Red Tractor’s governance and a broader one aimed at enhancing farm-to-fork assurance processes. Red Tractor’s Main (AFS) Board has expressed full support for these reviews, committing to cooperation and transparency. The organization has agreed to halt any new standards or modules until the completion of the NFU’s governance review.

Christine Tacon, Chair of Red Tractor, acknowledged the strong feedback from farmers across the UK, noting that their concerns extend beyond the environmental module to wider issues in UK agriculture. She emphasized that Red Tractor would make no further decisions on the Green Farms Commitment or changes to current standards until the NFU review is complete. Future work on environmental modules will involve deeper engagement with farmers and supply chains, considering UK agricultural policies.

An NFU spokesperson welcomed Red Tractor’s decision, noting that it aligns with the requests of NFU members and council. The immediate focus of the NFU is on conducting the first governance review, to be followed by a comprehensive examination of UK food assurance processes.

In the meantime, Red Tractor will maintain its existing standards and continue to uphold consumer trust in its logo. The organization also plans to further discussions on farm assurance benefits and the challenges of demonstrating environmentally sustainable farming practices. The NFU aims to complete the first review by January 2024.
