Bangladesh’s Role at the G-20 Summit: Fostering Global and Regional Partnerships

in Global Trade, International Relations

Bangladesh’s involvement at the G-20 summit has been noteworthy, illustrating its growing stature as an emerging economy with active memberships in various regional and international forums. The 18th G-20 summit, hosted by India, welcomed nations from across the spectrum, including Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Netherlands, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. India’s invitation to these countries underscored its initiative to include diverse perspectives in global discussions, particularly those from developing nations.

Bangladesh has been vocal on several critical issues such as the Rohingya refugee crisis, the food and energy crisis stemming from global conflicts, and climate change. Its advocacy for these issues reflects its commitment to contributing to the global peace and development agenda. India extended an invitation to Bangladesh for the 2023 G-20 summit, reinforcing the close ties between the two nations. Their relationship spans historical, cultural, linguistic, and economic links. India values Bangladesh as a key regional partner, with their cooperation extending to various sectors such as trade, connectivity, energy, and security.

The bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh were further strengthened during the summit, with the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering agricultural research, cultural exchanges, and currency transactions, aimed at enhancing mutual cooperation. Bangladesh utilized the summit platform to engage with both G-20 members and guest countries, focusing on attracting investment and promoting innovation. The country has been acknowledged for its strides towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and for its humanitarian response to the Rohingya refugee situation.

The G-20 engagement allowed Bangladesh to advance discussions on climate action and refugee support with leading nations. Despite facing significant climate challenges, Bangladesh has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and has called for the implementation of the Paris Agreement’s Loss and Damage Mechanism, seeking climate finance for vulnerable nations. Furthermore, Bangladesh took part in the launch of the Global Biofuels Alliance at the summit, aimed at fostering the biofuel trade to support net-zero emissions goals. Bangladesh’s participation in the summit also provided opportunities for diplomatic engagements. The country explored support from various global partners, contributing to its diplomatic goals. Notably, a casual interaction between Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and U.S. President Joe Biden captured in a selfie hinted at a friendly rapport, potentially signaling closer collaboration on mutual concerns.

In summary, Bangladesh has played a significant role in advocating for the Global South’s priorities at the G-20 summit, addressing critical issues such as climate change, the refugee crisis, and energy security. Bangladesh’s active participation is indicative of its ascending regional influence and economic potential.
