The Commissionerate Police has issued a public advisory warning residents about the increasing sophistication of cyber fraud tactics. This warning comes in response to a surge in cybercrime incidents reported in the region, prompting authorities to alert citizens to exercise heightened vigilance.

According to the advisory, fraudsters are employing various deceptive strategies to exploit unsuspecting individuals. These tactics include impersonating bank officials, sending fake job offers, and manipulating social media platforms to extract personal and financial information. The police emphasized the importance of recognizing these scams to prevent financial losses and identity theft.

One prevalent method involves fraudsters posing as bank representatives, contacting potential victims under the pretense of updating their account details or resolving issues. These calls often lead to the disclosure of sensitive information such as account numbers, passwords, and OTPs (One-Time Passwords). Citizens are urged to verify the authenticity of such calls by contacting their banks directly using official contact numbers.

Another significant concern highlighted is the use of fraudulent job offers. Cybercriminals are leveraging online job portals and social media platforms to advertise attractive employment opportunities. Applicants are then asked to pay a fee for processing their applications or securing the job. The police advise job seekers to scrutinize job offers and avoid making any payments without verifying the legitimacy of the employer.

The advisory also addresses the rise in social media-based scams. Fraudsters are creating fake profiles to befriend individuals and eventually request financial assistance under various pretenses. The public is cautioned to be wary of accepting friend requests from unknown individuals and to refrain from sharing personal information on social media.

The Commissionerate Police has provided several guidelines to help residents protect themselves from cyber fraud:

1. Verify Authenticity: Always verify the identity of the person or organization before sharing personal or financial information.
2. Avoid Sharing OTPs: Never share OTPs or other sensitive details over the phone or through email.
3. Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Offers: Exercise caution when receiving unsolicited job offers or investment opportunities.
4. Report Suspicious Activity: Immediately report any suspicious activity or fraudulent communications to the police.

In light of these developments, the police have reiterated their commitment to combating cybercrime through increased surveillance and public awareness campaigns. They have also encouraged residents to stay informed about the latest cyber fraud tactics and to educate themselves on best practices for online security.

The Commissionerate Police’s advisory serves as a crucial reminder for the community to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their personal and financial information against cyber threats.
