The Canadian federal government is allocating up to $20 million in funding to Foran Mining Corporation’s McIlvenna Bay mine project in Saskatchewan. The investment is part of a broader initiative to strengthen Canada’s critical minerals sector and enhance the supply chain.
Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced the conditional funding through the Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund. The support will assist in the development of infrastructure, including a hydro transmission line, an on-site substation, and electric vehicle charging stations. These upgrades are aimed at fully electrifying the McIlvenna Bay mine and positioning it for carbon-neutral copper production.
Foran Mining Corporation’s CEO and Executive Chairman, Dan Myerson, expressed that the project, supported by government funding, would contribute to sustainable resource development, job creation, and responsible mining practices in the region.
The project also aligns with Canada’s broader goals of economic reconciliation, particularly by engaging Indigenous communities. With global demand for critical minerals projected to double by 2040, Canada’s mineral-rich resources and skilled workforce are seen as key assets in meeting this growing demand.
