Following a recent shooting incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), security experts are recommending the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into airport security systems to better identify potential threats. Criminologist Datuk Dr. P. Sundramoorthy, of Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Centre for Policy Research, suggests that AI could significantly improve threat detection capabilities when combined with existing security technologies. Dr. Sundramoorthy explained that AI can enhance the capability of scanning devices, such as X-rays and explosive detection systems, allowing them to more accurately identify dangerous items like guns and knives. This technology relies on machine learning algorithms trained to recognize specific patterns associated with these threats, potentially reducing the need for manual screening.
The implementation of AI could extend to CCTV systems as well, according to crime analyst Kamal Affandi Hashim. He noted that AI could be used to monitor crowds for suspicious behavior, automatically alerting security personnel to potential risks, thereby facilitating quicker response times. Dr. Zalmizy Hussin, a senior lecturer at Universiti Utara Malaysia, also supports the integration of AI technology. He proposed that AI-enhanced CCTV systems could be linked with scanner and access control systems to create a more comprehensive security network. “By analyzing real-time video feeds and combining them with scanner data, AI can automate much of the threat detection process,” Dr. Hussin stated. He highlighted that such integrated systems would improve security monitoring, data analysis, and coordinated incident response.
However, experts acknowledge that these enhancements would require significant investment in terms of finances and manpower. Dr. Sundramoorthy emphasized the importance of balancing security improvements with cost-effectiveness and passenger convenience. In addition to technological upgrades, Dr. Zalmizy suggested that training for police officers in behavioral analysis and threat assessment is crucial to support AI systems effectively. He also recommended regular public awareness campaigns to educate passengers on security protocols and encourage their participation in maintaining a secure environment. These measures, collectively, aim to boost airport security efficiency, accuracy, and the overall passenger experience by reducing waiting times and enhancing operational effectiveness.
