The imminent coronation of King Charles III has once again brought the financial aspects of the British royal family into the spotlight, particularly against the backdrop of the United Kingdom’s ongoing cost-of-living challenges. The intricacies of calculating the royal family’s true cost are compounded by disagreements over the extent of financial benefits and other advantages associated with the institution.

A substantial portion of the royal family’s expenses is funded through the Sovereign Grant, a yearly taxpayer-funded allocation. In the financial year 2021-2022, this amounted to £86.3 million ($108 million), roughly £1.29 ($1.61) per person in the UK. The Sovereign Grant, stemming from an agreement with King George III in 1760, represents a fixed annual payment in exchange for relinquishing income from the monarchy’s properties.

The Crown Estate, though owned by the reigning monarch during their tenure, is not private property and is independently managed for public benefit. The majority of the Crown Estate’s proceeds contribute to public services such as policing and healthcare. The Sovereign Grant, previously known as the Civil List, constitutes a percentage of the Crown Estate’s profits, with the rate set at 25 percent since 2017-2018, up from the initial 15 percent.

Allocations from the Sovereign Grant primarily cover property maintenance, payroll, travel, and various expenses related to events and functions. Beyond taxpayer-funded provisions, the royal family possesses considerable personal wealth, including private art and jewelry collections and income generated by property portfolios like the duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall.

While the Sovereign Grant is fixed, actual spending fluctuates annually. Notable events, diplomatic visits, and initiatives like the ongoing Buckingham Palace refurbishment can influence expenditure. Critics argue that official figures fail to encompass the full cost, especially when security expenses are not included. Republic, advocating for an elected head of state, estimates the monarchy’s total annual cost at £345 million ($431 million).

Critics also highlight indirect costs, such as the royal family’s exemption from inheritance taxes. Despite voluntary tax payments from King Charles and Queen Elizabeth II before him, some argue that the true burden on taxpayers remains underestimated. Norman Baker, a former Member of Parliament, contends that the British monarchy is costlier and less modernized compared to constitutional monarchies in Scandinavia.

Supporters argue that the economic and cultural contributions of the royal family, including tourism, trade, media, and the arts, outweigh the costs. Brand Finance estimates that the royals contributed £1.77 billion ($1.95 billion) to the UK economy in 2017.

As the monarchy undergoes changes with King Charles, the debate over public spending on this institution may face increased scrutiny. Suggestions for a “slimmed-down” monarchy and greater transparency, such as moving out of Buckingham Palace or increased tax contributions, are discussed. The ongoing challenge for the royal family lies in proving its continued value to the British people, ensuring perceptions align with the economic benefits they bring to the country.
