Europcar Refutes Alleged Data Breach, Claims Shared Data is Fabricated

Car rental company Europcar has denied being the victim of a data breach after a threat actor purportedly offered to sell the personal information of 50 million customers. The individual claimed to have data for 48,606,700 Europcar.com customers and shared samples, including names, addresses, birthdates, and driver’s license numbers, on a popular hacking forum.

Upon investigation, Europcar stated that the alleged breach was fake, asserting that the data had been artificially generated using artificial intelligence. However, experts, including Troy Hunt from Have I Been Pwned, cast doubt on the claim that AI was involved, pointing out inconsistencies in the data.

Hunt noted that email addresses did not match usernames, addresses listed were non-existent, and there were discrepancies between U.S. regions in addresses and phone numbers paired with emails from other countries. While Europcar maintained that AI was used, Hunt suggested that the mention of artificial intelligence might be a sensationalized claim for attention rather than a factual description of the data’s creation.

Security researcher NexusFuzzy highlighted existing projects that enable the creation of data resembling the samples shared in the alleged breach. Despite the increasing use of artificial intelligence in cyber threats, this incident appears to be a case of fabricated data rather than a genuine AI-driven breach.
