The European Union has reached a consensus on implementing the Cyber Resilience Act, a set of regulations aimed at enhancing cybersecurity for various connected devices, including laptops, fridges, mobile apps, and other smart devices. This decision, agreed upon by EU countries and lawmakers on Thursday, comes in response to the increasing number of cyber attacks and ransomware incidents globally in recent years.

Introduced by the European Commission in September of the previous year, these regulations encompass all products that are either directly or indirectly connected to another device or network. The Act outlines specific cybersecurity requirements during the design, development, production, and sale stages of hardware and software products.

Under the new rules, manufacturers are obliged to assess the cybersecurity risks associated with their products. They must provide declarations of conformity and take necessary measures to address vulnerabilities throughout the product’s expected lifetime or for a minimum duration of five years.

The Act also demands greater transparency from manufacturers regarding the security features of their hardware and software products, both for consumer and business use. Additionally, it requires reporting cyber incidents to the relevant national authorities. Importers and distributors are also responsible for ensuring that products comply with EU regulations.

Jose Luis Escriva, Spanish Minister of Digital Transformation, highlighted the importance of these measures, stating, “Connected devices need a basic level of cybersecurity when sold in the EU, ensuring that businesses and consumers are properly protected against cyber threats.”

The European Commission estimates that the implementation of these cybersecurity rules could save companies up to 290 billion euros annually, compared to the projected compliance costs of about 29 billion euros.
