Eli Lilly has announced plans to enhance its pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities in the United States by establishing four new production sites. This expansion increases the company’s total U.S. capital investment commitments to more than $50 billion since 2020.
Three of the four sites will focus on manufacturing active pharmaceutical ingredients, aiming to strengthen domestic production and enhance the company’s supply chain resilience. The fourth site will support Lilly’s global network for parenteral manufacturing, contributing to future injectable treatments.
The construction phase is expected to create approximately 10,000 jobs, while the completed facilities will employ 3,000 professionals, including operations staff, scientists, lab technicians, and engineers.
Beyond job creation, the new sites are expected to provide economic benefits to local communities, including increased business activity, infrastructure enhancements, tax revenue, and workforce development opportunities.
“To advance next-generation therapies such as small molecules, biologics, and nucleic acid treatments, Lilly is investing in state-of-the-art manufacturing infrastructure to ensure the delivery of safe and reliable medicines,” said Edgardo Hernandez, President of Lilly Manufacturing Operations. “This initiative supports innovation in pharmaceutical manufacturing and requires a highly skilled workforce to shape the future of healthcare.”
Between 2020 and 2024, Lilly committed $23 billion to domestic capital expansion, leading to this latest $50 billion investment. Prior commitments included projects in Research Triangle Park and Concord, North Carolina, updates to Indianapolis facilities, investments in Lebanon, Indiana, and the acquisition of a manufacturing site in Kenosha County, Wisconsin.
Additionally, in August 2024, Lilly inaugurated the Lilly Seaport Innovation Center, a research and development hub in Boston’s Seaport District.
