China is strengthening fresh-produce supply chains as expanded rail connectivity brings larger volumes of durians from Southeast Asia to Chinese markets. A new China-Laos-Thailand cold-chain rail service is helping move fruit to China in as little as three days, improving delivery speed while maintaining product quality.
The improved logistics network is contributing to a significant rise in durian imports, with China importing 1.45 million tonnes in the first seven months of 2026, more than 45% higher than the same period last year. Greater supply and more efficient transportation have also helped make durians more affordable for consumers.
The development highlights how cross-border rail connectivity and cold-chain infrastructure can strengthen regional agricultural trade, reduce logistics barriers and connect producers across Southeast Asia with one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
