In a recent development, Mohamed AbuHamra, Chief Operating Officer of Digital Technology at DP World, GCC, has disclosed plans for Dubai Trade, the digital platform facilitating cross-border trade in Dubai, to incorporate generative artificial intelligence (AI) into its digital infrastructure. The objective is to streamline processes within the trade sector and supply chain networks.

AbuHamra, in conversation with Emirates News Agency (WAM), highlighted the ongoing efforts of Dubai Trade in introducing digital solutions aimed at enhancing user experience. He acknowledged Dubai Trade’s pivotal role as a unified platform for trade and logistics services, particularly in alignment with the International Maritime Organisation’s recommendation for seaports to adopt unified windows by 2024.

Emphasizing the complexities inherent in logistics services, AbuHamra underscored the potential of leveraging new technologies to simplify operations. He cited the contrast between purchasing a mobile phone via an e-commerce platform versus clearing a commercial shipment, aiming to bridge the gap in user experience between the two processes.

Regarding ongoing initiatives, AbuHamra mentioned a technical project aimed at expediting operations upon receipt of shipment statements at ports, ultimately facilitating direct delivery to warehouses without delays in clearance procedures.

While acknowledging the relatively slower pace of digital technology adoption in the trade and logistics sectors compared to other industries globally, AbuHamra reiterated Dubai Trade’s commitment to driving digital transformation.

Highlighting the extensive array of digital services offered through the Dubai Trade platform, AbuHamra emphasized the platform’s leadership and advancement in the field.

Looking ahead, AbuHamra outlined the focus on customer-centric improvements in digital services, alongside collaborative efforts with partners in the trade and logistics sector to enhance user journeys.

Reflecting on Dubai’s status as a prominent trade and logistics hub, AbuHamra noted significant economic growth in 2023, particularly in the non-oil trade sector, attributing part of the success to the efficiency of operations facilitated by the Dubai Trade platform.

He also underscored the role of trade partnership agreements signed by the UAE in advancing Dubai Trade’s operations, aligning with the platform’s support for the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.

In terms of achievements, AbuHamra highlighted Dubai Trade’s milestone of over 300 million completed transactions since its inception in 2003, contributing to substantial reductions in paper usage. Furthermore, the platform recorded a 25% increase in transactions in 2023 compared to the previous year, showcasing its growing significance in digital trade facilitation.
