The Department of Agriculture (DA) has announced that it aims to lower the price of imported rice to P49 per kilogram by March 2025. Starting February 5, the price will drop to P55, then to P52 by February 15. If global rice prices stay steady, the goal of P49 per kilogram should be reached by March 1. This decision follows a reduction in tariffs made by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last July, which was intended to help manage rice price changes. However, certain rice types, like Japanese black rice and locally grown varieties, will not be included in these price changes.
Additionally, the DA is working on new guidelines for rice labeling and is preparing for the possibility of declaring a food security emergency to help stabilize supply chains.
