Brushing Scams and Fake Luxury Goods: What You Need to Know

In recent developments, an emerging online shopping scheme, commonly referred to as a “brushing scam,” has raised concerns. This article delves into the intricacies of this deceptive practice and why it’s essential to remain vigilant.

Residents of Chicago and other locations have reported receiving unexpected luxury goods at their doorsteps. Items like a Cartier ring, complete with a “certificate of authentication,” appear to be genuine gifts. However, investigations suggest otherwise, highlighting potential risks associated with this phenomenon.

Reports of these mystery shipments have circulated widely on social media platforms, leaving recipients perplexed by the unsolicited deliveries. Individuals have shared their experiences, expressing disbelief at the authenticity of these products.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has investigated these incidents to shed light on the motives behind this seemingly generous gesture. Todd Kossow, Director of the FTC Midwest Region office in Chicago, explained that this practice is part of a brushing scam. Counterfeit goods are sent to recipients by companies, often engaged in producing knock-off merchandise, with the intention of exploiting their names and shipping information.

The ultimate goal of brushing scams is to generate seemingly authentic online shopping reviews. Positive reviews play a pivotal role in boosting sales for these businesses. Therefore, it’s crucial to exercise caution when receiving unexpected designer items free of charge.

Kossow emphasized that genuine designer merchandise is never sent as a free gift. Consequently, if you find yourself in possession of such an item, it raises concerns about potential breaches of your personal information. To safeguard your online shopping accounts and financial security, it’s advisable to take several precautionary measures:

  1. Change your passwords for online shopping accounts to prevent unauthorized access.
  2. Monitor your credit cards and credit score to detect any irregular activity.
  3. Consider placing a credit freeze to add an extra layer of security.

Scammers are keen on using your real name and information to substantiate the legitimacy of their fake reviews. This helps them evade suspicion when questioned about the authenticity of their posts. If you decide to investigate further by searching for the address associated with the shipment, exercise caution and avoid contacting the shipper directly. There have been instances of scammers attempting to extract sensitive personal information through such means.

In their quest to gather additional information, the I-Team contacted the source of one of these shipments but encountered a sudden hang-up when identifying themselves as ABC7 Chicago representatives. Additionally, they reached out to Cartier for comments regarding the use of their product name in this scheme, although no response has been received at the time of this report.

In summary, if you receive unsolicited luxury goods, it’s imperative to take immediate action to protect your online security. Changing passwords and monitoring your accounts are essential steps, while the decision to keep the free product remains at your discretion.
