Maersk, a prominent logistics company, has officially opened its latest warehouse facility in Sri Lanka, located in Wattala and spanning 100,000 sq. ft. The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of key figures including Vikash Agarwal, Managing Director of Maersk South Asia, Biju Ravi, Head of Maersk Sri Lanka, and Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake, Deputy Chairman & Managing Director of Aitken Spence PLC, alongside other leaders.
This newly established warehouse is aimed at bolstering Maersk’s commitment to providing comprehensive supply chain solutions, catering to the needs of both global customers and local suppliers in sectors such as retail and lifestyle.
Strategically positioned in Wattala, merely 11 km from the seaport, the facility is well-placed to capitalize on Sri Lanka’s advantageous geographical location, serving as a key junction for trade routes connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. With Sri Lanka’s flourishing trade sector and governmental efforts to enhance infrastructure and business facilitation, Maersk views this market as strategically significant.
The warehouse, divided into export consolidation and third-party logistics (3PL) services occupying 50,000 sq. ft each, will offer end-to-end supply chain solutions encompassing storage, inventory management, and distribution for both global and local clientele. The 3PL segment enables suppliers to store cargo efficiently and expedite movements to consolidation points, facilitated by Maersk’s adjacent empty yard, ensuring swift container handling and subsequent port transfers. Notably, the warehouse’s operations prioritize sustainability, featuring rainwater harvesting, LED lighting, and compatibility with solar modules.
Maersk’s latest venture aligns with its broader commitment to environmental responsibility and efficiency in logistics operations. The company, operating across more than 130 countries and employing approximately 100,000 individuals, aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2040 through the adoption of innovative technologies, vessel upgrades, and green fuel initiatives.
This initiative underscores Maersk’s dedication to enhancing its service capabilities while contributing to Sri Lanka’s economic development and reinforcing its foothold in the region’s logistics landscape.
