Senior Chinese trade negotiator Li Chenggang met with political and business leaders from the U.S. Midwest on Tuesday, with analysts highlighting the importance of the region’s agricultural exports in ongoing trade discussions.
The Chinese commerce ministry confirmed that U.S.-China commercial ties were a key topic during the talks, though no further details were provided. China, the world’s largest buyer of soybeans, has not yet purchased any U.S. soybean cargoes from the autumn harvest, which is primarily sourced from the Midwest.
Analysts expect that U.S. officials will seek commitments from China to increase purchases of American agricultural products and Boeing aircraft as part of broader trade agreements. Chicago soybean futures, which are already near five-year lows, declined further after the latest round of discussions, with no significant updates on agricultural trade reported following recent communications between the two countries’ leaders.
U.S. Ambassador to China, David Purdue, said on Tuesday that negotiations regarding China’s purchase of Boeing aircraft are likely approaching their final stages.
