China and Russia Sign Multiple Agreements During Prime Minister Mishustin’s Visit

During an official visit to China, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on May 24. This visit resulted in the signing of various bilateral agreements, including those pertaining to service trade cooperation, sports, patents, and the export of Russian millet to China. The visit, characterized by the ‘Global Times’ as a stepping stone toward an expansive future for China-Russia economic and trade cooperation, also included discussions with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. The agreements signal the deepening economic ties between the two nations and are seen as a continuation of the cooperative blueprint laid out by President Xi during his state visit to Russia in March.

This cooperation roadmap is poised to overcome past issues, with both countries working steadily to clear any blockages and bottlenecks that have previously hindered progress. The level of engagement, including the size of the Russian delegation and the number of entrepreneurs present, highlights the importance and potential of this growing economic partnership.

The ‘Global Times’ editorial mentioned in the report suggests that the United States should regard the evolving China-Russia relationship seriously, criticizing Washington for what is perceived as a narrow-minded approach that underestimates the breadth of Sino-Russian cooperation. The report also touches on the reaction of Western media to China and Russia’s collaboration, which is often framed within a context of geopolitical tension. According to the ‘Global Times’, there is a Western perception that this cooperation could be a strategic counter to Western influence, or that it portrays Russia as being overly dependent on China.

The editorial argues that the United States’ stance is influenced by hegemonic tendencies and a fear of a “China-Russia alliance,” which they consider a significant geopolitical challenge. This perspective is said to contribute to strategic tensions within the Asia-Pacific region. China asserts that its cooperation with Russia is based on principles of non-targeting, non-interference, and non-coercion, which contrasts with what the ‘Global Times’ describes as hegemonic practices of targeting and interference by others.

The ‘Global Times’ concludes with a metaphor quoted by Mishustin, suggesting that a broader perspective will reveal greater opportunities, echoing the sentiment that China and Russia are climbing to new heights in their cooperation.
