China and Peru have announced the signing of a protocol to upgrade their bilateral free trade agreement, marking a new phase in their comprehensive strategic partnership. The agreement, formalized during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent visit, aims to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, infrastructure, and sustainable development.
The upgraded framework introduces initiatives in emerging areas such as circular economy practices, sustainable agriculture, industrial supply chains, digital economy investments, and green development. Both nations expressed a shared commitment to fostering mutual growth while adhering to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices.
As part of the agreement, China and Peru plan to collaborate on large-scale infrastructure projects in accordance with national laws. Additionally, aviation ties will be strengthened through code-sharing agreements by Chinese airlines, with the potential for direct flights in the future.
The two countries also emphasized capacity-building in artificial intelligence and digital competitiveness, particularly to support vulnerable groups. In the fishing sector, they pledged to uphold sustainable practices, reinforcing their focus on ecological preservation.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to a transparent, inclusive, and rules-based multilateral trading system under the World Trade Organization (WTO). They agreed to support WTO reforms, strengthen its dispute settlement mechanism, and promote an effective global trading framework.
