Canada and European Union Deepen Trade Partnership

in International Trade and Investments

Canada is strengthening its economic partnership with the European Union as it expands international trade relationships and develops additional opportunities for businesses across interconnected markets.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to address the European Parliament in Strasbourg on September 16, 2026, where he will also attend the European Commission president’s annual State of the Union address. The visit is expected to support closer cooperation between Canada and the European Union across trade, technology, energy, security and other strategic sectors.

For supply chains, stronger Canada–European Union cooperation could create additional opportunities for market diversification, sourcing, investment and cross-border logistics. Broader trading relationships can also provide businesses with more options for accessing suppliers, customers, technologies and strategic resources.

Canada has increasingly focused on expanding its economic partnerships beyond its largest neighboring market. At the same time, Canada and the European Union have been developing their strategic relationship, including cooperation in trade and investment as well as technology and energy.

In June, Canadian companies became eligible to participate in the European Union’s Security Action for Europe initiative, which provides up to €150 billion in financing for joint defense procurement. The development adds another dimension to economic and industrial cooperation between the two markets.

Canada and the European Union are also expected to hold another summit in late October, with discussions anticipated to focus on strengthening their economic and commercial partnership.

The growing engagement highlights the importance of diversified international partnerships in building connected supply chains. Greater cooperation between Canada and European markets could support new trade routes, investment opportunities and commercial links across industries.
