New Delhi, India: The Bajaj Foundation is set to inaugurate India’s first youth-focused sustainability summit, scheduled for January 18, 2024, at the Siri Fort Auditorium. This summit is designed to educate and engage the youth on the pressing issue of e-waste management and its environmental impact. Supported by notable organizations including the United Nations, Ministry of Electronics and IT, UGC, and TERI, the summit aims to unite young leaders, environmental experts, and policymakers in addressing the challenge of effective e-waste management.

The Youth Eco Summit will center around four foundational pillars: Educate, Engage, Innovate, and Felicitate. It seeks to foster a platform where innovative solutions for sustainable e-waste management and ecological restoration can be developed, particularly focusing on engaging the youth. The initiative has received backing from various organizations, including Tecno Mobiles and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Arts. Planned as an annual event, the summit will feature interactions with over 200 schools from the Delhi NCR region, panel discussions with stakeholders, scholars, and researchers, as well as competitions for innovative solutions, best online slogans, and waste-to-art creations.

The event will also include Eco Awards for schools. Among the key discussions at the summit will be panels on “Decoding the Crisis: e-waste & its Environmental Impact” and “From Awareness to Action: The Consumer’s Pivotal Role in e-waste Mitigation.” Notable actor and humanitarian Sonu Sood is set to discuss the importance of collaborative efforts towards a sustainable future. Mr. Darrin Farrant, Director of the United Nations Information Centre, emphasized the global challenge of e-waste, stating, “The United Nations is working to unify countries, producers, and consumers in tackling the increasing e-waste problem and promoting sustainable electronics usage worldwide.”

Mr. Pankaj Bajaj, Founder of the Bajaj Foundation, spoke about the summit’s objectives, highlighting the Foundation’s dedication to environmental welfare. The focus on e-waste at this year’s summit was inspired by the positive response from students during awareness programs on sustainable e-waste management in schools across Delhi-NCR. With India being the world’s third-largest producer of e-waste, experiencing a significant increase in electronic waste, the summit aims to empower youth with the knowledge and tools necessary to innovate and collaborate on tackling the e-waste challenge, thereby contributing to global environmental preservation efforts. Students are increasingly recognized as active contributors in the fight against e-waste, bringing new perspectives and ideas to the forefront of this global issue.
