Southeast Asian nations must enhance the resilience of their supply chains to navigate ongoing economic shifts, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Speaking at the ASEAN Future Forum 2025, he highlighted the impact of recent trade measures, including tariffs imposed by the United States and responses from affected countries, as indicators of increasing economic complexity.
Anwar noted that while supply chain diversification presents opportunities for ASEAN, the region must carefully assess its position to maximize potential benefits.
“The key question is whether ASEAN can fully leverage these shifts or if challenges in the global trade environment will create further uncertainties,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring that trade and investment benefits are equitably shared among all ASEAN member states to prevent widening economic disparities.
Pointing to significant differences in economic development within the region, Anwar called for a trade integration model that aligns with global sustainability trends. He cited variations in gross domestic product (GDP) per capita among ASEAN nations as a challenge requiring collective action.
“We must work together to ensure that economic growth is inclusive and sustainable across all ASEAN countries,” he added.
