PAF and USAF Conduct Exchange of Best Practices on Maintenance and Logistics

Philippine Air Force (PAF) personnel and their counterparts from the United States Air Force (USAF) engaged in an exchange of best practices on aircraft maintenance, supply, and logistics management during the ongoing Cope Thunder Philippines (CT PH 24-1) exercises.

According to PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo, the exchange, termed a “subject matter expert exchange” (SMEE), occurred at Basa Air Base in Floridablanca, Pampanga on Tuesday. The SMEE focused on topics such as maintaining communication with suppliers, improving the Logistics Information System (LIS) for spare parts sustainability and storage, and highlighting the significance of an engine test cell in maintenance facilities. The event was led by the 35th Logistics Readiness Squadron (LRS) of the USAF.

Castillo emphasized that this collaboration demonstrates the commitment of the PAF to continuous improvement and excellence in aviation operations.

The CT PH 24-1, which began on April 8 and ends on April 19, will have a second iteration in June. The bilateral exercise encompasses logistics and mission support planning and execution necessary for large force deployment, preparing the PAF for its expected participation in Pitch Black Exercise 2024 in Australia in July. This exercise is part of the Mutual Defense Board and Security Engagement Board activities for the year.

In a separate development, Filipino and American fighter pilots flying FA-50PHs and F-16 jet fighters conducted air combat maneuvers (ACM) over an intensive military training area west of Zambales province. These simulated scenarios aimed to enhance the pilots’ skills in engaging and surviving in air combat situations, vital for upcoming Large Force Employment (LFE) missions during ‘Balikatan’ Exercises 2024. Castillo highlighted the importance of these drills in improving pilot proficiency and fostering stronger coordination between the Philippine and US Air Forces.

Regarding ‘Balikatan’ 2024, executive agent Col. Michael Logico noted the wider training benefits provided by this year’s varied geographical locations, particularly those involving littoral areas. These areas near the shores offer unique challenges and learning opportunities compared to exercises conducted solely within military camps. The exercises, which took place from April 22 to May 10, included various locations in Luzon and maritime drills off Palawan, aiming to enhance joint capabilities and operational effectiveness across all branches of the Armed Forces.
