In a joint report, the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) emphasize the critical role of the construction supply chain in combating climate change. Major industry players, including Laing O’Rourke, Holcim, and Bouygues, are actively implementing strategies to support global net zero ambitions and drive sustainable growth.

According to WEF and BCG, the construction sector’s value chain is instrumental in achieving sustainability goals. The organizations highlight that the design and construction of buildings significantly impact carbon emissions, with the sector responsible for 37% of global carbon emissions. Sustainable practices in the building industry could unlock approximately $1.8 trillion in market opportunities worldwide while delivering substantial social and environmental benefits.

Sustainability-certified buildings, such as those with Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) recognition, offer a competitive market advantage. Companies excelling in sustainability metrics demonstrate lower ESG risks. Energy-efficient designs, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, and advanced energy management systems contribute to significant cost savings and reduced energy consumption.

Examples of successful sustainable practices include the air-conditioning upgrade at Beijing’s Taikoo Li Sanlitun shopping center, which reduced energy consumption by 66%, and the Bullitt Center office complex in Seattle, projected to generate $18.5 million in societal benefits over its lifetime.

Green buildings provide numerous benefits beyond energy efficiency. They reduce pollution, promote biodiversity, and create healthier living environments by improving air and water quality. Technologies such as modular construction and prefabrication minimize waste and construction time, gaining traction in urban areas like the Middle East.

A coordinated approach between public and private entities is essential to capitalize on the green transition in the construction sector. Embracing global standards, adopting best practices, and developing policies supporting research and development can drive transformation. Examples include Holcim’s circular technology platform for 100% recycled concrete and Bouygues’ promotion of low-carbon cement and recycled materials.

The construction industry’s potential to impact the environment is immense. By revolutionizing building practices, materials, and energy efficiency, the sector can lead the way towards a sustainable future.
