Apple and Google have issued a new round of cyber threat notifications to users worldwide, part of ongoing efforts to help customers protect themselves from surveillance and malicious activity.
Apple reported that warnings were sent on December 2 to users in over 150 countries, though the company provided few additional details regarding the nature of the activity or the parties involved. Google followed with its own announcement on December 3, warning users targeted by Intellexa spyware across “several hundred accounts” in countries including Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Angola, Egypt, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, and Tajikistan.
Intellexa, a cyber intelligence company, has been noted for evading certain restrictions, according to Google. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Previous waves of threat notifications have prompted investigations by government bodies and cybersecurity organizations. Researchers note that these alerts help impose costs on malicious actors by alerting potential victims and can trigger investigations that promote accountability in cases of spyware misuse.
John Scott-Railton, a researcher with the digital watchdog group Citizen Lab, emphasized that such notifications “are often the first step in a string of investigations and discoveries that can lead to real accountability around spyware abuses.”
